"My name is Bruce Lawrence, I am a Detective with the Sandwich Police department, Cape Cod Ma. While I was a Patrolmen a few years ago I was involved in a confrontation with a disorderly and combative male subject. I needed to take him into custody and he did not want to go. I put him on the ground once but did not have control of him and he was able to get back to his feet. At that point it became a brute strength against brute strength situation and having only limited hand to hand techniques that where taught to me in the police academy I relied on instinct which was just, pile drive this jerk into the ground. I did, he was placed in cuffs and taken away. I then missed the next two weeks of work do to a twisted knee that occurred during this incident."
"I contacted Dana Smith who I had been introduced to through my police department. Dana had been a member of the Sandwich Police department as "special" police officer doing some under cover work. He had also donated some equipment to a gym that I had built in the police station. At the time Dana was opening a new school in Middleborough and told to call him if I was interested. I called, told him the story and said, "There had to be a better way of getting someone under control faster and easier." He gave me directions to his school and we acted out the scenario using my methods first. I think we wrestled for about five minutes, Dana, using no special technique. After being winded for a few minutes we traded roles and I was now the bad guy. My actions where as they where that night. I found myself face down in a perfect handcuffing position in less than ten seconds. Dana had complete control of me and needless to say he was not winded. I was hooked! Dana then explained what "IMPACT" solutions was, (Integrated Marshall Protection Against Combative Techniques" I was introduced to Paul Curtain, founder of ISG and I can say that what I learned from Dana and Paul made me a better Cop. As a police officer you have a tendency to "size" people up when you arrive on a scene. You should be thinking about proper procedure, the law and your surroundings rather than weather or not you can take this guy. After learning the techniques that are taught in this class I gained more confidence in my physical ability which allowed me to be calmer and more focused at the scene's I responded to. I have used these techniques on many occasions and is has made my job easier. I highly recommend this training to anyone who may have to encounter combative people in the course of there duties.
